Hey Ricky and Tara,

I have just started reading the blog and love it!! Wish I knew about it while you were away. To answer a couple of your questions ...

- Mansion is the Japanese word for apartment. It is almost the opposite of the English word (though it is derived from English). Don't ask me why.

- That Edelweiss music you heard is probably uyoku people. You won't believe it until you read about it (and see it for yourself). People in black vans drive around pumping out weird music with loudspeakers spewing right-wing nonsense. They want to kick foreigners out of Japan (and much more). Hehe first time I saw the van I asked my friend what it was. She just took me away from the footpath and said "yakuza". Since then, I've discovered what it really is. Now I know why she didn't want us to stay near the van!

It is really interesting seeing Japan through your eyes. Since I'd studied the country and language before I went there, I didn't experience the same amazing/wacky/confusing discoveries! Your insights are so funny and I'm constantly nodding and smiling to myself - you are so right!

You're bringing back lots of great memories!

- I love the irashaimaseeeeeeeee bit. It is truly the most annoying sound. I think those salespeople out the front of the store must have competitions to see whose nasal, high-pitched, stretched-out greeting is the best/worst.

- OMG Sangenjaya. That's two subway stations from my home away from home, Setagaya (Komazawa University). I think I've actually been to that restaurant - Sangen is a great place to eat with traditional restaurants.

- Bakeries in Japan, mmm. Andersen's is a great chain and every time I'm in Japan I must eat a banana bread each day!! It's walnutty goodness can't be beat! Feeling Japan-sick now.

This day reminds me of when your Dad and I were in Paris (1980) - trying to find the right train to head south ! and yes, I was in tears, frustrated not being able to get anybody to understand us !!!
So I know where you guys are coming from - a holiday moment to laugh about years later !

You will survive !!!

Dear Space Cadets Simmons and Sullivan,

It's always a lovely drama in Japan. Madly flicking through your phrase book while everyone is talking to you at once. I had the same thing happen to me at various restaurants in Tokyo. While I was asking people what it was that was actually put in front of me, everyone is trying to tell me to 'eat it' in broken engrish, using all sorts of hand actions.

You guys sound like you're having a wicked time. And you're making me miss Japan! Keep up the good work on the blog guys. It's a great way to pass the time at work (don't tell Boss)

"Can I get, any of you chinks a drink?"

Sincerely,
Mission Command

Thanks for correcting the price Adam, I was in a hurry as I had a time limit on the machine. 460 bucks would be expensive, still 46 was outrageous. Right now I'm using the hotels reception pc over the counter, he is a kind man.

Oh no! The cab ride sounded like hell. Glad you guys got out of that situation without having to deal with the Japanese mafia, who are not so forgiving. Are you serious about a fare costing 46,000 yen? That's almost $500 Australian! Lesson learnt I guess, hope you guys keep having fun.
